Former cop, Colleen McDonald, has fled ugly memories in Oregon to establish a new life in Florida. Before she has a chance to unpack, she’s drawn into a missing persons case involving her elderly landlady’s nephew and the handsome sheriff’s deputy investigating the case.

Colleen carries deep scars, both physical and emotional, from the horrifying shootout in which her partner was killed. She suffers from panic attacks and nightmares, but rebuffs Deputy Graham Harrigan’s initial efforts to break through her protective shell. Graham is trying to prove himself to his superiors in his first case as a detective, but is instantly drawn to the prickly, mysterious Colleen.

The plot is an interesting twist on a police procedural, giving the reader an insider’s view of the workings of the Orange County Sheriff’s Office. But the main appeal of the book is the characters. They are layered and complex—real people with real emotions. The author has taken care to show Colleen and Graham’s developing love affair as much more than just sex. As a result, when they do make love it’s the culmination of an emotional journey from pain to joy.

What a great review. It makes such a difference when characters have complexity and depth.

Thanks, Leigh - for me, it's ALL about the characters.
