Agent Danielle La Rue wants to make a good impression on her first real mission for the DEA but when her anticipated partner is killed, his replacement isn’t exactly what she had in mind. Rick doesn’t follow the rules and when his partner and friend is killed, revenge is square on his mind, even if it puts sexy Danielle in a tough spot. Between rampant emotions, nerves and gun deals, Rick and Danielle find themselves fighting attraction as well.

For the military romance lovers out there, Cherie De Sues needs to go to the top of their ‘must-read’ pile. The romance element is front and center, the two main characters finding their way through their feelings and attraction as they continue to fight and figure out exactly what is happening with the other pieces of the story. South of the Border is an intense read and it’s a good thing it’s not that long because you won’t be able to put it down.

A former vampire slayer, Mila has become the monster that she despises, a fatality on the quest to save her sister from the leader of the vampires. On the run from Steele, the vampire holding her sister, and his minions, Mila must find a book of power in order to invoke the gods for assistance. To top things offs Mila is accompanied by Bryce the leader of the lycans. While the lycans and the vampires are enemies Mila’s actions keep Bryce by her side as they work together to stop Steele and his vampire army. Will the lycans finally win the war with the vampires and save humanity from destruction? Or will Steele’s tyranny continue to destroy civilization leaving the humans defenseless.

I really enjoyed this story. It was an epic battle story slimed down to a little over 100 pages, because of this the pacing is very quick and the characters are constantly on the move. Mila and Bryce have an intriguing relationship and despite the hatred between their races, they manage to create something wonderful between them. The two of them have great chemistry and were a pleasure to read. There is a lot of plot to this story, which was unique and enjoyable, but there isn’t a lot of background provided on the characters because of the plot is so overwhelming. I’m also not a fan of stories in first person so that was an irritant for me, but the story was still well told and was entertaining, although the ending is odd. It is worth the read and if you enjoy first person, then you’ll love it.

Which is Best - Book or Film?

by Grace Elliott

Dusting down my book stash I came across two TBR books that have recently been made into movies and they set me thinking….

As a teenager I vividly remember getting swept up by the 1973 film ‘The Three Musketeers – The Queen’s Diamonds.’ Starring Oliver Reed and a young Michael York. It transported me to a world of romance and adventure that I ached to be a part of. To prolong the experience I then read the novel by Alexandre Dumas – and loved every word and searched out his other books. I owe a debt of gratitude to that movie because through it I discovered a truly timeless author in Dumas.

On the whole, I find film adaptations of Jane
Austen novels disappointing. Her books are so engrossing, once you get past the slightly dated language, I find myself willing the characters on. However the only Jane Austen movie I managed to sit through was the 1995 version of ‘Sense and Sensibility’, mainly because Alan Rickman was just so perfect as the emotionally constipated Colonel Brandon… And there’s the rub. If the casting doesn’t match my visualization from the book – it’s over before it begins.

So does that mean it’s best to see the film first…? No. For the simple reason that some films as such poor adaptations, you’d never give the book a second thought. In my opinion ‘Dune,’ is a classic example. Loved the Frank Herbert book; Quote ‘Fear is the real mind killer,’ (shiver), but the film was a total disaster, missing all the psychological tension.

The Harry Potter series can be argued both ways. I love the films, but in their own right. If you want the detail and beautiful nuance of the characters then it must be the books every time – just too much sheer crafting gone into those many pages to be translated onto the screen.

So what do you think? Do you cross pollinate between page and screen? What are your best and worst experiences? I’d love to know…

In a quirky college town surrounded by the mountains of New Hampshire, new art history professor Jacob Oliver hikes a trail on a crisp September morning. He contemplates his life. Divorced, and forced out of his job with the Boston Police due to a horrific accident, he spots a naked woman beneath a majestic waterfall. Escaping, he falls and re-injures his knee. Destiny Blake heard a noise. Someone is on her mountain. She finds a handsome man sitting in the mud. Love blooms and lust consumes them after she helps him to the safety of her cabin. Soon assumptions tear them apart, leaving her vulnerable to the unwanted attentions of other men. When Jacob decides he cannot live without her, he must save her from a madman who chases her up her mountain through the cold, snowy darkness of a November night. Ghostly voices push Jacob onward, while another spirit’s voice urges Destiny to fight back. Pain, hypothermia, and death threaten as the sun rises. Can Destiny and Jacob make it off Destiny’s Mountain…alive?

I enjoyed this book a lot.  The description really makes the reader feel the chill of a mountain in New Hampshire.  It’s a great book to read by the fireplace.  The suspense was consistent throughout, leading up to a great ending.  I felt the technical details of the paramedics added a bit more than was absolutely necessary for the story, but you could tell the writer knew what she was talking about.  The heat level was just right and the dirty thoughts and actions of the ‘villains’ kept the reader anxious.
